Visual Effects in Animation

Computer Generated Images (CGI) are now used everywhere, from TV commercials to big blockbusters. This business has gone from being a research subject known to few to a mainstream subject taught by many advanced graphic design courses. Pixar started out in 1979 as the animation division of Lucasfilm. This division was started by George Lucas.  Throughout the 80's, it became famous as a research centre in CGI world. It invested time conducting experimentation and research with animation tools and principles, the results of which reflected in the future Pixar movies to come.

In the year 1986, Pixar was purchased by Steve Jobs. It created its first short the Dream of Red, the next year. Though it appears primitive by the today’s standards, this brief had been nominated for an Academy Award, and won many awards. Pixar created Toy Story which was the first feature length film created with custom 3D computer graphics software. It showed the world CGI storytelling that had never been seen before. Toy Story was originally programmed as a 30 minute Christmas special for television.

Disney, which was licensed to manage Pixar's marketing and distribution, saw the movie and realized its potential. Executives at Disney believed it'd be a big hit as a film. They suggested to Pixar that it should produce Toy Story as a full length film. Following Toy Story, Pixar developed 10 more feature length movies entirely made with 3D computer graphics. They have all been huge hits and are among the most successful films in history. Toy Story 3 is one of the highest grossing animated film of all time. All these films were an innovation on the previous one.

It is easy to see how Pixar is challenging the boundaries of CG. If you want to bring your own imagination to life and share it with the world, you can start your journey with Part Time Animation Courses and Animation Diploma offered in Singapore by MAGES Institute of excellence.
