and displays, corporate communications and corporate identity are some vital fields
where a graphic designer needs to work. In the
graphic design programme, students are taught how to arrange graphics
impressively and efficiently and to read, understand and communicate in the
language of graphic design. The graphic design degree modules are as follows:
- Introduction to Graphic Design: In this module, the students will be introduced to the world of graphic design. The history, present and future scope for graphic design will be discussed in detail to set the foundation of knowledge for students. Students will be taken along on a ride through the famous works of graphic designers. The students will also be introduced to online design resources that will inspire and enrich student’s education throughout the module.
- Elements of Design: Here, students will study about design factors through projects such as; creating examples of colour schemes, using graphics software and creating an original alphabet based on a theme. The students will be introduced to designing software.
- Elements of Principle: Using the various design elements students will put the principles to practice. They will learn the principles of design through projects such as; posters, creating original designs that reflect an emotion, magazine covers, product ads etc. They will get an understanding of balance, contrast, emphasis, harmony, movement/rhythm, proportion, repetition/pattern, unity and variety.
- Introduction to Typography: Typography is a significant skill to the graphic designer. In this module, students will learn the history and evolution of the alphabet and typographic design and will advance into basic theory and practice. The students will create a business proposal and create branding for that business including commercial and magazine ads. Students will learn topics such as anatomy of a letter, typefaces, typographic measurement, typographic standards and typographic guidelines. Students will also learn how to apply graphic design elements and principles to typographic design.
- Photography: In this module, the students will learn the basic tools as they need to shoot photos as a graphic designer. It is important for students to learn how a graphic designer works with professional photographers and learn how to source online stock photography. The students will be introduced to the pixel-based graphic design programme.
- Branding and Design Systems: Layout, color, typeface, photography, imagery, text, composition and style come collectively to form a perceived “brand” for businesses, products and individuals. In this module, students will survey visual identity by creating a brand and developing a system to communicate that brand across multiple platforms.
- Web and Mobile Devices: This module introduces students to techniques associated with the design and implementation of websites and pages. They learn about diverse features of coding and other software-based methods for generating and managing simple websites. Design skills for interacting with mobile devices are also learnt.
- Design Portfolio: In combination of instructors’ guidance, students will study, review and refine previous deliverables based on peer and faculty evaluation, and create a portfolio that demonstrates a mastery of industry standards and expectations. Students will present and discuss their portfolio of work to the audience/ jury.
